The launch of Dragon O’Wa

On 3rd June 2016, TTCCI hosted the launch of Dragon O’Wa at the Rydges Southbank Hotel, Townsville. The ceremony attracted more than 200 participants. In her speech in the launch, the President of The Townsville Chinese Club Dr Wendy Li says:

“First, I would like to acknowledge the Traditional Owners of the land on which we are meeting. I pay my respects to their Elders, past and present, and the Elders from other communities who may be here today. It is Mabo day today. We also celebrate the history making Mabo decision.

“As the president of the Townsville Chinese Club, I am honoured to be here to launch Dragon O’Wa on the behalf of the Townsville Chinese Club.

“Dragon O’Wa is an art project funded by RADF and created by the Townsville Chinese Club. It consists of 14 panels which are contributes by our sisters cities in China, TCC, local Indigenous communities, and local schools and community and business groups. Dragon O’Wa brings the Chinese communities in Townsville and China and local communities together. These 14 panels were contributed by the Townsville Chinese Club, Townsville City Council, Foshan City, Changshu City, Townsville Aboriginal and Islanders Health Services, William Ross State High School, Annandale Christian College, Community Radio, Townsville Kungfu Academy, Oriental Food Supplies, Complete Import, and Allison Milcock. Thank you all so much for your great support and wonderful creativity.

“I particularly would like to acknowledge 19 artists who are the members of the Townsville Chinese Club. They have made contribution to the creation of Dragon O’Wa’s head, body and tail. These artists have worked collaboratively for a year almost in every weekend. Every piece of Dragon O’Wa was hand-made by these talented artists! Please allow me to hand out the Certificate of Appreciation to Meelynd Hung who represents these lovely and creative artists.

“Dragon O’Wa is named by Mr Luo Zhiqi, an artist of our sister city Foshan City, China. The meaning and pronunciation of O’Wa in the Chinese language represents Australia and China. “O” is also the surname of the King Dragon in the Eastern Ocean in China, the region where Foshan City is located. It is my privilege and honour to invite the Mayor of Townsville Cr Jenny Hill to dot the Dragon’s eyes using a gold colour. Dotting the eyes makes the Dragon come alive and becomes the Dragon King to provide protection to Townsville. ”
